King George III’s (1738-1820) return to good health in March 1789″

Description

This small oval Bilston  patch box with a hinged and clasp bronze metal mount is decorated in royal blue on the outside of the base. The lid in white enamel on copper is painted with a portrait of King George III and surrounded by the inscription

“Britons rejoice your King restored”   GEO. III  REX.

This is commemorating King George III (1738-1820) return to good health in March 1789 after being unwell for some time.

The source of the words on the patch box comes from a medallion which was made with Dr Francis Willis on one side and Britons rejoice your King restored 1789 on the other.

Dr Willis in November 1788 was called to attend the King and became famous for the treatment he gave to His Majesty .

Bilston is in the west midlands, Staffordshire and became well known in the mid eighteenth century for the art of enamelling  producing decorative scent boxes ,bonbonnieres and patch boxes.
