Description
A eighteenth century Derby porcelain figure of Neptune. He is standing on a rocky mound covered in seaweed and brightly coloured seashells, along side him is a dolphin which has water cascading from its mouth. In his left hand he is holding a gold plated trident .The base has six patch marks (which is unusual to have so many), where pads of clay were placed on the base to prevent the figure from sticking to the larger oval sager in which they were placed during the firing process. These round pieces of clay were then knocked off the base after the kiln was cooling and it left a foot print of where they had been. Also on the base is an incised number 299 and a star for Isaac Farnsworth, who was employed as a repairer and an over looker. The figure was made in 2 sizes (this is number 2 hence the incised number 2 on the base).
Neptune was the Roman God of the sea, fresh water. He is a key figure in Roman mythology, brother to Jupiter and Pluto.

The trident is a modern gold plated replacement.
