Description

A figure by Dudson of Hanley Staffordshire, England, with the factory founded by Richard Dudson in the early 1800’s .

This is a spill holder figure group of a mother reading to her two children.  The boy is holding a cricket bat in his right hand and there is a doll’s crib at his feet.  The branches are decorated in white shredded clay, painted green in colour, as opposed to the dark blue parsley version where the dye is mixed into the clay. Go to Dudson  on this website for an example of a “Blue Parsley Figure” and  (see book ‘Dudson Staffordshire figures c 1815-1865’ page 79 by Audrey Dudson & Alison Morgan).

This figure is one of a series of three of the same model, each decorated with different types of colours and shredded clay.

To quote Audrey’s book, using the same mould to make the same figures but decorated in different styles was sound business practice and typical of Dudson.  Customers could be offered a product which could then be selected by price, or according to taste.
