A rare Staffordshire pottery bust of Father Theobold Matthew, the Irish Priest, titled.

Father Mathew, or Theobald Mathew (1790-1856), an Irish Catholic priest who led mass temperance and abstinence pledges in Ireland, England, and the United States from the late 1830s to the early 1850s. There are no visible maker’s marks, but probably Staffordshire, ca. 1830s-1840s. Condition is overall very good to near fine; individual condition issues will be elaborated below.

Father Mathew’s temperance and abstinence campaign flourished from about 1838 to 1851. At the height of the movement in Great Famine-era Ireland, it’s estimated that Father Mathew succeeded in enrolling between 3-4 million Irish in his anti-liquor pledge, which represented roughly half the adults of the country.
