William Clowes was born in Burslem, Staffordshire on 12th March 1780 and trained as a potter. He attended the first Primitive Methodist camp meeting ever held in England at Mow Cop on 31st May 1807. He was joined at this meeting by Hugh and James Bourne and others. In 1808 he preached his trial sermon with the Wesleyan Methodists and was duly appointed a local preacher. During 1810 the Primitive Methodist Connexion was co-created by him and the Bournes. He worked mainly in the North of England, as well as Cornwall and London and in 1819 he introduced Primitive Methodisim to Hull. On 10th June 1842 he was placed on the superannuation fund but still continued his labours as before and was at work a day or two before he death, of paralysis on 2nd March 1851 in Hull. He was a man of strong common sense and great mental powers.
